These one-of-a-kind hand-woven baskets are made by widows of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. During the course of the 18-week slaughter, some 800,000 people were killed—almost 11 percent of Rwanda's population—and nearly 100,000 children were orphaned. For generations, baskets like these have represented familial bonds in Rwanda, and are the traditional gift for newlyweds and new mothers. Now these gifts take on an added dimension: they are a way to sustain the families themselves. Each basket you buy from the Business Council for Peace (Bpeace) allows a mother to feed her family for a month. The hand-dyed color of these baskets has been created exclusively for COLORS.
Proceeds also go to the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)—the leading advocate for women worldwide—which supports the widows' organizations in Rwanda, and to Bpeace, a non-profit coalition of businesswomen who work voluntarily to support sustainable businesses for women in regions of post-conflict, in order to strengthen women's ability to take care of their families and build peace in their societies. In collaboration with UNIFEM, Bpeace has worked to bring the unique baskets of the Rwandan women to people around the world.
